I’ve always been drawn to the beauty and grace of dance. So when I was given the opportunity to photograph the opening night of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Charlotte, NC, I knew it was going to be an amazing experience.
As I arrived at the Belk Theater, the excitement was palpable. The theater was abuzz with energy as the dancers and crew prepared for the performance.
When the curtains finally opened, the stage was transformed into a mesmerizing display of light and motion. The dancers moved with incredible precision and emotion, each movement conveying a powerful message. As I captured their images, I tried to not only capture their skill, but to also portray them in an artistic manner that conveyed the beauty of their performance.
As a photographer capturing art, there are a lot of technical considerations. The lighting conditions were constantly changing, requiring me to adjust the settings of my camera to match the scene. It was a delicate balance between capturing the mood of the moment and freezing, but not stopping the motion. With every click of the shutter, I felt like I was freezing time and capturing the essence of the performance.
The next night, I attended the show with my wife, daughter, and nephew. We had front row seats, giving us an up-close view of the dancers and their movements. The Belk Theater was a stunning setting, with its elegant decor and intimate ambiance and this spectator perspective was truly appreciated.
Throughout the show, the staff at the theater were attentive and welcoming, making us feel right at home. As the performance drew to a close, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience such an incredible display of talent and artistry. And as I looked through the images I captured, I knew that I captured not just the dancers, but also the magic of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
